ACCOLADES: (Here is a list of leading roles Yuya's has in school theater performances over the past two years, plus a glowing review of his familiar Odd-Eyes)

BIO: Hello! You can call me Yuya. I'm from Sendai, Japan. This is my second year in Daybreak Academy. I'm a Tamer, and Odd-Eyes is my familiar. He's the big red dragon that hangs out in the courtyards. He's friendly but he tries to steal food sometimes. I speak Japanese and English but not very good French. I'm also in the theater club. I'm in Lumiere 203. Let's be friends!

He~h, how nice of your dad! I'm kinda jealous!

[ Of having a good parent, or even somebody to play with when he was little. Bless Ellie for being in his life, tbh. Kano shuffles closer to Yuya until they're shoulder to shoulder, thankful for the light the phone gives off and starts to scroll through what's there.

It's going to be El Orfanato... ]

Something like... This one? I wonder if it's anything like the orphanage I lived in?

[Yuya feels a little bad after saying it because Kano's dad was never in his life, and his mom was... so Yuya moves right off the topic of parents.]

Eh? [Yuya leans closer and squints.] You... want to watch a horror movie?

[He hates horror... but he's also not about to admit he gets squeamish over a movie. He's a tough guy!!] Yeah, okay. If it is, you should say so.

[He's not clicking the play button.]

[suddenlybees]

[ Maybe Kano's real dad is somewhere out there, and also a daemon, we'll never know.

Is it a horror movie? Whoops. ] Haha, yeah! That's the sorta stuff you watch in a blanket fort, right? Watching scary movies, telling ghost stories~

[ He presses play and is never making a blanket fort ever again. ]

I never did. Not that I won't. [He turns up the brightness and contemplates turning the flashlight on.

He grabs blindly for the popcorn to shove a whole fistful in his mouth before they're even out of the opening credits.]

[suddenlybees]

[ No..... Turning up the brightness means there's more light, but it also means they can see the screen better and Kano's not sure if that's any better. He draws his knees up to his chest so he has something to hug.

The first part of the movie is nice, at least... Daylight, kids, it looks like a party.

He doesn't eat any popcorn. ]

[It's always the first part that puts you into a false sense of security. But it'll get worse, Yuya knows.

He glances aside to Kano and tenses up, determined to hold his ground. But by the time the unsettling atmosphere sets in he's pulled his pillow around to clutch it to him.]

[suddenlybees]

[ Yuya can't win this battle, because as soon as the music shifts into something tenser, Kano immediately zones out and keeps this face on the entire time. Yuya absolutely won't catch him being afraid, there will be nothing but smiles from him. ]

[hippocarnival]

[He refuses to admit weakness. It's fine, it's not real...

Which is why he's frozen right beside Kano, the pillow pressed to his face to only his eyes see over while his fingers dig deep grooves into it.

That mask is going to give him nightmares, like he doesn't have enough.]

[suddenlybees]

[ Kano can close his eyes and cover his ears under the illusion, but that doesn't stop him from jumping every time Yuya so much as shifts next to him. It was a mistake sitting so close. This movie is too long.

Eventually, he can't stand it anymore, sneaks a hand over and pokes Yuya on the knee. ]

[Yuya yelps and jerks his legs up, curling into a ballas he stares at Kano with wide eyes.

Then he forces his legs back down, acting like he didn't just do that.] What?

[suddenlybees]

[ Kano stifles a scream when Yuya does, because he really should've expected that, and leans back apologetically. ]

Sorry, sorry! Just wanted to tell you I'm going to the bathroom! Didn't want to just get up all of the sudden and scare you!

[ He's going to go hide in the bathroom for as long as humanely possible. Maybe he has severe constipation or something, he can play it off. ]

[hippocarnival]

Uh. That's fine, I'll pause the movie! [Yuya's already scrambling to jam his finger against the touch screen until it stops. He doesn't want to watch this alone either.]

[suddenlybees]

[ No!!!! If Yuya watches the movie, Kano will have to watch the rest of it when he comes back... ]

Hmm, okay! You can play around and stuff on your phone until I get back! I'll try to be quick!

[ Maybe Yuya can drain his battery and there won't be enough charge left to finish the movie. ]

[hippocarnival]

Okay! [He plays a game for about two minutes before the ambient noise and the darkness gets the better of him. So he sets his phone on maximum flashlight and buries his face in the pillow and waits for Kano to get back.

He didn't have it to full charge, but it'll definitely be more than an hour before it'll actually drain.]

[suddenlybees]

[ Kano sits in the bathroom for the better part of an hour, unless Yuya comes get him sooner. He has enough patience for this. ]

[hippocarnival]

[Kano gets away with most of it, only because Yuya isn't watching the time. Finally he realizes Kano's not back, checks his phone, and then creeps out of the blanket fort to the bathroom door. The flashlight is still on.

He knocked softly before leaning his ear to the door.] Kano...? Are you okay?

[suddenlybees]

[ He jolts when Yuya knocks on the door, but thankfully nobody is around to see. Hopefully the girls on the other side don't need to use the bathroom tonight. ]

-—Uh, yeah! Just got an eyelash in my eye, it's taking a while to get out!! Gotta be careful not to rub it out, you know????

[ He goes back to sitting on the sink counter and zoning off. ]

Oh. All right. [He waits two minutes before he creeps to the light switch and flips then on. There, he feels less nervous out of the darkness.

He assumes Kano's going to be a while, so he grabs his sweats to change into them in the meantime.]

[suddenlybees]

[ He sits around for a while, until he gets bored, which doesn't take very much longer. So, quietly, he opens the bathroom door and out steps



that dead kid from the movie, with the sack over his head that I would google to describe better but I'm a weenie and am too scared to. That kid. Because Kano thinks he's hilarious. ]

[hippocarnival]

[The peace is over immediately and Yuya shrieks, topples backwards into the blanket fort as he throws his phone at Kano.]

[suddenlybees]

[ WHY WOULD YOU THROW A PHONE AT A LITTLE—-

Kano gets decked in the face and stumbles backwards, illusion dropping as he clutches his mouth, blood dripping down past his fingers and spilling onto the ground. ]

[hippocarnival]

[That's not a little kid!!

Yuya drags himself into the fort completely before he scrambles up to poke his head out--] Kano!

[... Of course it was Kano. And he's bleeding, Yuya didn't think his throw was that good.

Ugh, Yuya crawls out of the fort and back to his feet and approaches Kano.] Is it your nose? Here, tilt your head back.

[suddenlybees]

[ Slowly, Kano removes his hands, tilting his head back to show blood streaming from both nostrils, opening his mouth to say something but blood starts to pour out of his mouth too, teeth falling out from bright red gums and spilling out onto the ground. ]

[hippocarnival]

[Yuya stumbles to a horrified stop, breath hitching in immediate panic before he rushes all the way over and braces his hands on Kano's shoulders.

... But realistically there is zero chance Yuya could actually knock Kano's teeth out with his phone. But it's still really gross to see.]

Let me see where the actual blood is! [He reaches to put his hands to Kano's cheeks and tilt his head back, which actually makes it less visible since he's taller than Yuya but also he's really trying to keep what might really be a bloody nose from getting worse.]

[suddenlybees]

[ The illusion is obvious, but he still got that initial reaction out of Yuuya, so that's really all he was going for, laughing as the blood fades away and disappears— all of the blood, both nose and mouth, teeth all back together. There's absolutely no way the phone didn't hit him, but Kano's not letting on where that might be. Pain has no effect on his illusions anymore, which makes it both useful and more dangerous. ]

I'm kidding, I'm kidding~ I'm alright, Yuya!!
