STATUS: Student Grade 9
ACCOLADES: (Here is a list of leading roles Yuya's has in school theater performances over the past two years, plus a glowing review of his familiar Odd-Eyes)
BIO: Hello! You can call me Yuya. I'm from Sendai, Japan. This is my second year in Daybreak Academy. I'm a Tamer, and Odd-Eyes is my familiar. He's the big red dragon that hangs out in the courtyards. He's friendly but he tries to steal food sometimes. I speak Japanese and English but not very good French. I'm also in the theater club. I'm in Lumiere 203. Let's be friends!

He blinks rapidly as the shape changes, absently trying to physically feel the illusion in his hands.]
... Uh. Three feet, maybe? [Sounds about right to stop somebody's dog from getting to it.] It doesn't have to be wide.
no subject
—Hey, Yuya. What'd Toki say? About all of this?
no subject
[He rubs the back of his head.] I think he was sad about it, but... I guess since he was expecting it, he wasn't as surprised.
no subject
Kano drives the shovel into the soil with a little more force than necessary, requiring him to put a little more muscle into pulling it back out. ]
...Did he cry? He's not the sort of person who drinks his sorrows away, is he? His liver, Yuya...! Watch his eyes the next few days, okay??
[ He doesn't know how people deal with grief!!!! He doesn't remember crying, or processing, or any of that- he wouldn't be able to help Toki and is just praying he doesn't have to, Yuya, that's your job now. ]
no subject
His expression twists uncomfortably.]He said he wouldn't go drinking without bringing someone with him next time, so it shouldn't be a problem?
[Like, hopefully they won't let him drink himself to death. He said he'd be more responsible!!]
no subject
He was gone too soon.
Kano heaves a sigh, and steps back from the hole he'd dug. ] We'll all deal with it in our own ways, I guess. Alright, alright~ How's a funeral work, do you know, Yuya? We bury that, and then fill up the hole... A moment of silence? Should we water the ground, because of the tree thing?
no subject
That sounds right? I guess is depends, but I don't know how spirits do it... Odd-Eyes said there wasn't anything like that where he's from.
[Yuya glances over at the shrine.] But Tsuyukusa... sounded kind of like a kami. There's no funeral exactly, because their spirits persist. When you honor them, they can find a way back.
no subject
[ ALRIGHT. Kano claps his hands together and rubs them together furiously for added effect, and just sort of starts shouting at the shrine. ]
TSUYUKUSAAAAAAA-! IF YOU CAN HEAR ME, COME BACK!! I'M HONORING YOU, CAN YOU HEAR ME!!?! I'LL WEAR UGLY TIES TO SCHOOL IN YOUR HONOR AND- Um... Is that the sort of honoring? YOU'RE SUPER SMART, AND RELIABLE, AND IT WAS FUN TO --crap, he's supposed to be a jellyfish?
[ he throws a quick glance over his shoulder at the second floor window but never mind, never mind ]
I'LL WORK HARD TO KEEP THE OCEANS CLEAN! NO LITTERING OR PEEING IN THE OCEAN!! I'LL SAVE THE WHALES!!! SO PLEASE COME BACK, TSUYUKUSA!!!
no subject
What are you doing!?
no subject
How much did you tell him, Yuya??
[ Does he know they're holding a funeral for his pet jelly... Should they have invited him? It's rude not to invite him, isn't it? It's rude and they should've invited him-- he pokes Yuya in the side. ]
Maybe ask him if he has any last words? But phrased in a non-threatening way!
no subject
He nearly drops the hut when Kano starts shouting, gently gathering it up to try and place it even a second time.] I don't know if that's how it works for him...
[He just has the shrine right, draws his hands back--and then feeezes when he hears Toki.] I, uh, forgot to mention the funeral?
[He rises to his feet, turning to face the window, cupping his hands to his mouth.] IT'S JUST ME! WE'RE, UH, MAKING A GRAVE FOR TSUYUKUSA.
no subject
[He stops and shuts the window. He very likely has a lot to say about this and he might as well do it from down there. A couple minutes later, he's approaching the 'grave', rather confused at the whole thing, and not wearing shoes or a coat.]
Okay, why are you doing this, like at all, but especially in the middle of the night? Not that I completely disapprove! It's just, there's nothing left and why would you do it without telling me!? He was-
[Oh. There's a... shrine thing.]
You made a shrine! It's so cute~!
no subject
Isn't it cute? Yuya made it~ He did a great job, right, right?
[ Get him focused on this, less on the funeral as a concept... ]
no subject
[Which Toki then calls cute. Yuya lifts his head with a faint smile.] I thought that was more important than something to bury.
[... But he still buried something.]
no subject
You made it!? Why!?
[He's not upset, he just doesn't understand why Yuya would ever go through the trouble. Then... more important than something to bury.]
Aw, he got to you~, didn't he~!? He does that! Did that... This is... I... thank you?
[He's going to cry.]
no subject
He stays silent, grabbing a candle from the circle himself out of lack of anything to do with his hands, and plops onto the ground behind the shrine- motioning for Yuya and Toki to sit too, in a circle/triangle in front of it. y'all go and pay your respects; talking like this, Tsuyukusa would be able to see how deeply the two of them cared about him, and maybe his spirit will listen to this and maybe he'll come back. ]
no subject
[And Yuya's a crybaby. He wipes his eyes. At Kano's motion he sits, and also gestures for Toki fo join them.]
no subject
No, he was- he was very special...
[He doesn't know how these things go. Toki had attended Ginshu's funeral, but he wasn't really 'there' for it and didn't do anything but stand around awkwardly and not cry one single tear.]
Are we supposed to say something?
no subject
...Maybe you two can talk about some of your favorite things about him. Happy memories, and stuff?
[ Whatever sadness or tears threatening to spill, Kano hides it for the other two's sakes, tries to think about other things instead, like how absolutely mortified Tsuyukusa was every time Kano took his picture. Thank god he immortalized those precious moments in his phone's SD card, they can never see the light of day again. ]

Alas, poor Tsuyukusa! I knew you for such a fleeting moment, the months come and gone so quickly~! An unexpected friendship that I will treasure in my heart for eternity~! You were a sympathetic ear for my struggles, a confidant for my most hidden fears and aspirations alike, and a truly remarkable example of a bond of friendship that transcends the need for communication~! So many times, you would float patiently in silence, while providing unconditional companionship~! You bore witness to the most terrible events in my young life as well as to my lowest moments of desperation, distress, and hopelessness! There will never again be a friend so intertwined with my very being as you were~! I will remember you fondly and find solace in the notion you have ascended to an existence I cannot perceive at present, but that one day we shall be reunited and once again bare our very souls in fellowship~!
[Toki's crying by the end, despite all attempts not to. He was a jellyfish. Get it together.]
no subject
don't cry don't cry don't cry goddamnit Shuuya come on
Kano ducks his head, then sends a sharp glance Yuya's way as if to say, "Alright, your turn, you have to top that." ]
no subject
Yuya sniffs loudly, trying to wipe his eyes.] Ts-Tsuyukusa was really... I didn't know him long, but I liked watching his tank and I think if he could speak, he'd have a lot to say about it. Toki was probably important to him, too, taking care of him until...
[Jellyfish can't speak and no one can prove him wrong.]
RNG mandated mood whiplash, cw: suicide imagery
You help take care of him, too, Yuya. I'm sure he enjoyed your company. K-kano, do have something to say?
[He's still crying a little and staring at the candle flames. This hurt more than it should have. He doesn't move at all for a time, but he can't see the candles anymore...
He's standing in the middle of the street; it's deserted, there's no cars or pedestrians. It's evening, the sky darkening and the street lamps bathing the pale stone of the buildings in soft yellow light. He doesn't recognize the one he's looking at; there's columns and carvings of medallions or circular flowers. Lots of windows. Closer, there are statues in robes with crowns and lion shields, above are the carved words 'DEPARTS'. Underneath one of the statues 'COMPEIGNE' is carved into the stone. Low echoey bells chime and he looks up to the clock in the center of the building, surrounded by giant glass windows. Before he can read the time, the clock had melted into a moon; huge and bright and full, the craters visible and clear. No longer deserted, people chatter and walk around him. Surrounding buildings boast assorted red and pink decorations and hearts, signs still advertising specials and holiday inventory. At the edges of the crowd is something dark and ominous, void of shape like a thick mist, tendrils almost finger-like emerge from it, touching people who don't take any notice. The colors mute into a palette of grays except for her. Minako. She's in the middle of the throng of people, shouting something he can't hear and holding a gun to her head. Shadows blanket everything as a gunshot rings out, followed by stark silence.
... jumping up quickly, and upsetting the shrine, he reaches out for Minako.]
NO! DON'T!
[She's gone. He's outside the dorm, doing... something... with Kano and Yuya. It doesn't matter what at this point.]
no subject
Toki jumping to his feet and Kano does as well, candle flame snuffed out when he drops his to the ground and grabs at the one he'd stupidly given Toki before the shrine catches on fire and/or Toki accidentally steps on it. ]
—hey! Toki! Alright, alright, I won't say anything, okay!!?
[ This reaction to him wanting to say a couple of words... Another pleading glance gets thrown Yuya's way to get Toki to calm down please. ]
Yuya...!
